  • I got IP banned from a Call of Duty server

I go away for a week for a conference in Hawaii, my kids use my comp, and presto I'm IP banned from a Call of Duty server

That's permanently banned. Dealing with their mods is like reasoning with a cult.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

You think that's bad, try reasoning with me.

Moderators on FPS games has to be strict and suspect that complains in regard to bans may or may not be excuses or outright lies. Some people will pretty much do anything to get back in on a server they like, and more often than not, some hack or aimbot or exploit of another nature have been used. In this case by your kids, most likely.

It is very hard for moderators of any game to know if the claim of innocence is true or false, that is unless the game tracks and stores gamedata history in the same way many MMOs do. In most FPS games, especially those with locally run servers, gamedate is rarely stored. Only the ban and IP address is actually kept. As such it would be very difficult to conduct any investigations. Claims of innocence must as such be judged by the moderators on a player to player basis, quite often not taking the risk of letting a hack back in.

In the war against aimbots this is quite common, and sadly, necessary.

And no, I am not an FPS moderator. Just had to deal with some of them myself... :P

No, no more bands. My old band reformed for my wedding though, my wife played drums on one song. Which was cool.

Torbk, your assumes games can ever be fair. With ping and other factors a dubious assumption.

I don't really care about aimbots or wallhacks - except on one occasion when this player couldn't be removed and ruined a game with a blatant aimbot and some sort of invincibility hack. That really stunk.

Just enjoy the killing is my philosophy.

Indeed I do enjoy the killing. I even enjoy getting killed as long as I get to fire my guns first. And I do not assume games are fair, there are always factors such as balance issues, uneven teams and so on..

I do truly and really hate aimbots. There is only two reasons to use such a device. Either a) you intend to grieve other players such as in the ruination of the game, or b) you lack the skill to compete with other players (suck at it) and must use a digital solution to even the score. Some argue that to beat a game infested by aimbot players (even if only 1/10 is using an aimbot) one must use an aimbot oneself. This is a faulty argument as increasing aimbots on a given server only further unbalances the game for everyone else. Banning aimboters are the logical conclusion.

Either way, using an aimbot generally ruins game experience, creates an unfair advantage that wasn't supposed to be there (see cheating) and also removes other players respect for the aimboter. The aimbot might think he is the king of the field, but everyone not using an aimbot will see him as the lowest of the low.

Aimboting is really self-destructive in the end. It does not garner, but remove respect from the user of said bot.
Last edited by torbk; June 17, 2010, 07:12. Reason: Adendum; added argument to the reasons of aimboting.

I don't see the point of hacks either. Very occasionally I win a round but you're only competing with yourself really.

In the time you spent arguing about this I got laid and millions of oil galloons leaked into the Gulf. It shouldn't take a NASA picture of Earth from 2,000 miles away for you to realize your insignificance.

You act like you didn't have time to add capitalization and punctuation to that message because you had better things to do. What a crock. Everyone knows you had time to add capitalization and punctuation to that message and didn't have better things to do.
