    Laser surgey-- Horror stories

    Although my eyes are not "that bad" I am going under the laser tomorrow so that I can see the TV or down the ski hill without glasses/lenses. It should be a straighfoward lasik procedure with a day to recover back to full vision. They "guarantee" nothing but state there is a 96% chance I will be 20/20 or better with a single surgery and if not, refinement surgeries to fix things are included. The appointment takes a couple of hours with the procedure being just a few minutes .


    I have already decided to do this but I thought poly being poly, you guys could "encourage" me by posting all your horrible anecdotes about lasers gone wild etc etc. Or maybe I'll get shocked and hear about good experiences-- one never knows....

      My Dad had it done many years ago and had no issues. I'm sure the technology has improved since then as well. I'd do it too, but I'm not a good candidate because I'm so nearsighted. Implantable Contact Lenses would be a better option for me.

        Don't attempt to climb Everest. Extreme altitude causes weird side-effects on people who've had it done, and if there's one place you really don't want temporary blindness to occur, it's 28,000 feet up a mountain.

              Ya they say laser surgery is good for people up to minus 10 or something. Beyond that they have a couple of procedures deeper in the eye available

                  I am inviting my eye to be sliced so I can see without contacts but a "real man " flips a small piece of material into his eye???

                    Good to know-- AS someone that prefers skiing down small to medium sized mountains instead of climbing up large ones, I feel pretty safe on this front

                      I'm thinking about it myself. A friend of mine did it and no complaints so far. Must be nice not having to wear contacts or glasses anymore...

                        Considered it for years but never did it. The high 90s just weren't good enough odds for my taste.

                        Eventually I developed cataracts, pretty severe, in both eyes (I'm 56). So my surgery involved extracting the actual lens and replacing it with an acrylic version. Recovery time was one day, and I'm now 20/15 for both near and distant vision (monovision correction). Plus, now I have bionic vision.

                        I would say the key thing is to use a highly reputable and experienced surgeon. This is your vision we're talking about. I know two people who had post-surgery issues with Lasik, and both went the bargain (only $695 per eye!) route.

                            I am going to probably the most expensive place in town. They were recommended by my wife's optometrist and several co-workers. My surgeon is their most experienced guy.

                            My assessment last week seemed (as a layman to this) to be very comprehensive with numerous gadgets plus independent assessments by a tech of some type, an optometrist and a surgeon. Their information was comprehensive and explained all the risks. AS a lawyer I think they did an exceptionally good job on ensuring people are giving "informed consent".

                            Overall I felt they were professional and reputable. None of that guarantees a perfect result however. They said the most likely problem that could arise and put me in the 4% requiring a second surgery is if I heal differently than expected and my vision ends up at an annoyingly close minus .5 or something so they need to do a touch-up
