If there's ever been an example of the stupidity of people in this world, it's the popularity of this sport and the World Cup.

The World Cup, particularly this one, does not reflect the game as it is played properly at a decent club level. In many respects, the WC is for people who aren't actually interested in football except for once every four years when they jump up and down supporting their national team. Anyone fortunate enough to support a decent club side doesn't really give a toss about international football.

That's part of the problem with the sport then, if the biggest tournament can't represent its best play.

Olympic hockey is the pinnacle of ice hockey. The best teams there are true superteams, it's quite a sight every time it happens. And that's how it should be.

It seems that the skill variance in soccer is not as wide as it is in hockey. At least that's my impression. You've got a handful of "soccer stars", who are supposed to be Gods out there, but they can't seem to do much of anything without playing on a stacked Premiership club? They don't seem to be that much better in practice than your average, say, Slovenian soccer player. Or Algerian soccer player.

Luck is more important in Football/soccer than in most other sports, so an inferior team who plays very defensive, to get a tie and not lose, can get lucky and win against a much better team.

I agree, the only sport I follow is men tennis, I only like the world cup because of the chauvinism and schadenfreude, no other tournament can rival with it in those aspects

I like it because every time the World Cup happens, all of the soccer players take off their clothes for various magazines. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining.
