For instance we can look up the Spain-Switzerland match from yesterday and find out that Spain ran a total of 104,268 m and Switzerland a total of 119,913 m. Switzerland's Fernandes ran the farthest at 12,244 m.

We can also find out that the Spanish players had an average top speed of 19 km/h vs Switzerland's 20 km/h. Fastest of all was Switzerland's Von Bergen with 26.39 km/h.

Right, thanks for the stats. So, how the distances players run during the game (10K+ m) make them closer to sprinters (100m)? What Speer is trying to prove is really beyond me.
Not to mention that football is not about how fast you can run or how much more you can run in comparison with your opponent, it's all about scoring more than the opposing team. I mean saying that football players are more sprinters than marathoners is just dumb. Football players are both sprinters and marathoners, more like sprinters who run their short distances over and over again within 90 minutes of the game.
