  • And Serb, just to be clear, auxillary usage of arms during running will never result in significant hypertrophy even in the presence of steroids. It flat out will not happen without resistance training. It's not adequate stimuli for fast-twitch muscle growth.

Understanding energy systems underpins the study of exercise and the effect it has on the human body.

Why are the metabolic demands of soccer so different from long-distance running but the same as hockey and very similar to basketball?
Because soccer is not a freaking marathon. Where is the same figure for short-distance running, btw? How these figures help to prove your original point that soccer players have more in common with the sprinter than the marathon runner?

Ah, bullsh!t, take another pill and do more running and your shoulders will be fine.

It's a comparison of how each of the energy systems contributes to meet the physical demands of each sport.

Soccer and hockey are 50% ATP-PCr & (anaerobic/fast) Glycolysis, 20% (aerobic/slow) Glycolysis and the beginnings of Oxidative, and 30% Oxidative.

Umm... take a look at the distance runner's energy profile. Take a look at the rowers. Do the endurance sports resemble soccer at all? What does? Hockey... basketball... hell, 50m freestyle swimming!

yeah i can read the chart. but what attributes on the field do they represent.

You're effectively stating that steroid usage in conjunction with waving your arms around will lead to big biceps! Geez! Somebody ought to tell all the bodybuilders that! They're like suckers lifting weights!

Muscular hypertrophy (except in the case of very green novices) requires resistance training. Flat out. You don't gain significant muscle mass without resistance training.

What do you mean by attributes? I'm not sure how they figured this out. The data comes from The Physiological Basis for Exercise and Sport. Googling around, I've found there are devices like something called a Seahorse XF24 Analyzer that can non-invasively measure physiological changes in cellular energetics and metabolic pathways in vitro using optical biosensors. Whatever all that means I guess they hooked someone to a device and had them play a simulated game.

What strawman? I never understood what a strawman fallacy is. I mean I get the dictionary definition but how does it apply to me? What misrepresentation of Serb's position did I make?

I'm complimenting soccer players by associating them more with sprinters rather than marathon runners. What exactly are you taking issue with?

oh... he was in Wickerman... i thought that was just a Nick Cage movie.

I thought this all stemmed out of me asking how fast the American Football player you quoted could run 10k. I didn't say Footballers were like 10k runners, if someone else did I missed it.

So the strawman is that Soccer players are long distance runners (which no-one said), and you've proved they aren't.

Serb said football players were like 10K runners... and somebody else said it earlier but I forgot (maybe Ben Kenobi). Serb has also said that soccer players are closer to marathon runners than sprinters, taking contention with my point that they are closer to sprinters.

So no straw man then, I guess, right?
