  • Freaky if true. 157 year old woman?

    I just seriously doubt it.

    Indonesian census discovers 157-year-old woman

ESTIMATES of the size and composition of Indonesia's booming population may remain just that despite an ongoing census, if the "discovery" of a 157-year-old woman is anything to go by.

Census officials have said they believe the woman's claims to have been born in 1853, when Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata debuted in Venice, the Crimean War erupted and San Francisco got its first street signs at intersections.

"There's no authentic data to prove her age but judging from her statements and the age of her adopted daughter, who's now 108 years old, it's difficult to doubt it," statistics bureau official Jhonny Sardjono said.

The only person verified to have lived past 120 years of age was Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122.

South Sumatran villager Turinah would be fully 25 years older than Calment when she died, according to officials.

Even more incredible, she still works around the house and has smoked clove cigarettes all her life, Mr Sardjono said.

"Despite her age she still has an incredible memory, clear sight and has no hearing problems. She speaks Dutch quite fluently," he added. Indonesia was a Dutch colony for hundreds of years until 1945.

He said Turinah burnt all her identification documents to avoid being linked to an alleged communist coup in 1965.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country with a population of about 240 million people.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said the census results will be important for future governance.

A 157 year-old woman is just as fanciful as the "pretty good trend" you think exists in the American employment numbers.

Very convenient that she burned her identifying documents back in 1965. You'd think a supposedly 112 year old woman wouldn't give a **** at that point in her life.

          Better yet:

In the province of Szechwan in China lived until last week Li Ching-yun. In China where Age means something he was a great man. By his own story he was born in 1736, had lived 197 years. By the time he was ten years old he had traveled in Kansu, Shansi, Tibet, Annam, Siam and Manchuria gathering herbs. He continued to gather herbs for the rest of his first 100 years. He lived on herbs and plenty of rice wine. When asked for his secret of long life. Li Ching-yun gave it readily: "Keep a quiet heart, sit like a tortoise, walk sprightly like a pigeon and sleep like a dog." The "Scholar War Lord" Wu Pei-fu. not satisfied with this formula, took Li into his home and was lectured on "how to get the most out of each century" by maintaining "inward calm." Some said he had buried 23 wives, was living with his 24th. a woman of 60, had descendants of eleven generations. The fingernails of his venerable right hand were six inches long. Yet to skeptical Western eyes he looked much like any Chinese 60-year-old. In 1930 Professor Wu Chung-chieh, dean of the department of education at Chengtu University, found records that the Imperial Chinese Government had congratulated one Li Ching-yun in 1827 on his birthday. The birthday was his 150th, making the man who died last week—if it was the same Li Ching-yun, and respectful Chinese preferred to think so—a 256-year-old.

It reminds me a relatively lame joke, set in USSR.

The reporters found out about a 150 year old peasant lady, and rushed to interview her. They asked her to tell them about the secret of her long age. She replied "well, during the revolution..."
they interrupted her: "no, no, we don't want to talk about the revolution. tell us about your youth!"
she continued "well, during the revolution..."
they interrupted her again: "we all know about the revolution, grandma. Tell us about the days of Nicolas II, Alexandre II, the Crimean war!"
the old lady got angry: "let me finish! during the revolution, there was such a mess that they added me 60 years in my papers!"

Populations get cut down dramatically from 80 to 90, then again from 90 to 100, then again from 100 to 110. (There are only three surviving World War I veterans today.) Then the population gets cut down dramatically once again from 110 to 120; specifically, only two known people have ever lived to that age. The oldest living person now is only 114.

From 120 to 130, from 130 to 140, and then from 140 to 150, and then from 150 to 157? It would be one of the most improbable events in human medical history.

My grandmother and her twin sister were the oldest living dutch twins when they turned 100. Her twin sister gave up the day after though. My grandmother is still going strong!
