    I see...

Anyway, I'm downloading the Crysis demo. Want to see what all the fuss is about.

I honestly don't give two sh*ts about Crysis, all I know is that it is something of a computer-killer and makes for a convenient Internet meme. That, and "Will it blend?" but I don't think this super computer is going to fit in a standard tabletop blender...

Crysis is a pretty game but horribly inefficiently coded.

Other games achieve 90% of the visual quality of Crysis with 200-400% of the performance.

          Asher:

That's what I kind of figured. Games like Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed, etc. are very nice to look at but also run very smoothly. I can't imagine Crysis looking much better than those games because they look pretty damn good already. Probably right about the 90% thing.

Use this graphic to compare how the world's Top 500 supercomputers stack up against each other.

That picture pretty much says it all. I don't think the US has anything to fear when it comes to having the biggest and most super computers.

If you looked at the trend, you may think otherwise.

I'm standing next to a supercomputer right now

I used to have full access to BlueGene/L and ASCI Purple back when they were #1/#2 in the world.

Worked on compiler optimization on them.

I should probably clarify that the supercomputer in question is a Cray SV1 and is currently disabled because we need its power outlets for our new Core i7 cluster and donated-by-Northrop Grumman 70 node itanium cluster.

                        I don't think the SV1s are fast today. They're 11-12 years old.

That was my point. The core i7's and itaniums are pretty fast though, especially considering that they are hooked up with infiniband.

We have parallel computing (used to be called supercomputing) classes so we bought the i7's to replace the Cray. Then Northrop Grumman donated their cluster that they didn't need anymore (it's apparently not quite fast enough for them). So in terms of curing cancer or building ships, nothing really but we do use them for classes.
