Why do roads in London look about as straight as wandering cow paths which got paved over?

Because we have a history - often based around roads a couple of millenia older than the United States that weren't devised by a town planner with a ruler.

It's really very simple, even if many of those roads were created by a Roman bureaucrat with a ****ing ruler.

Oh, come off it. Half the city got leveled in WW2 and you folks could have built some straight roads if you'd wanted to. Slackers.

Amazingly enough, the roads didn't get levelled, because they were already level.

We did trash a few mazes and warrens when the Victorians ploughed some new roads through a few slums and rookeries, but the fact is, the Luftwaffe didn't do as much *concentrated damage* as 1666, when despite Wren's subsequent insane and irresponsible ideas to go all rational everywhere, people dug their heels in and most of the old medieval street layouts prevailed.

So thankfully we don't have some dull, soul-less grid like Paris or Madrid. Or those ghastly lego-blocks you have over there in the New World.

They are rather ghastly grids but they make it so easy to find your way around in a city even if you're unfamiliar with it. Oh, well. No doubt the evil London taxi people wanted to keep it cryptic so they could lock all the tourist transportation money down.
