  • In Soviet Russia, Oil Slick Nukes You!

Russian experts recommend the US use a nuclear explosion to stop massive off shore leak. The Russians say they used nukes to stop oil leaks at least 5 times during the Soviet period.

    Nuke that slick

    By JULIA IOFFE

As BP prepares to lower a four-story, 70-ton dome over the oil gusher under the Gulf of Mexico, the Russians — the world’s biggest oil producers — have some advice for their American counterparts: nuke it.

Komsomoloskaya Pravda, the best-selling Russian daily, reports that in Soviet times such leaks were plugged with controlled nuclear blasts underground. The idea is simple, KP writes: “the underground explosion moves the rock, presses on it, and, in essence, squeezes the well’s channel.”

Yes! It’s so simple, in fact, that the Soviet Union, a major oil exporter, used this method five times to deal with petrocalamities. The first happened in Uzbekistan, on September 30, 1966 with a blast 1.5 times the strength of the Hiroshima bomb and at a depth of 1.5 kilometers. KP also notes that subterranean nuclear blasts were used as much as 169 times in the Soviet Union to accomplish fairly mundane tasks like creating underground storage spaces for gas or building canals.

These kinds of surgical strikes to shut off underground leaks, however, were carried out only five times, with the last one occuring in 1979. And there was only one misfire, near Kharkov, Ukraine, where a nuclear blast was unable to stanch a gas leak.

Happily, with a track record like that, “the chances of failure in the Gulf of Mexico are 20%,” KP writes. “The Americans could certainly risk it.”

I'd chip in for that, if only for the apoplexy it would send Robert Cunningham into.

I'd like to be able to visit the Gulf Coast again sometime this century. Without a hazard suit. And a Geiger counter.

Honestly it would likely all be contained underground since they're recommending doing it a kilometer underground which is also a kilometer under the ocean. The only big problem I can think of off the top of my head is it might fracture the formation and result in lots of little seeps instead of a couple of big gushers.

That would be what I was thinking. How awesome would it be if they fractured the strata above and instead of a leaky pipe, we have God-knows-how-many mini oil leaks throughout the seabed over a large area carrying small amounts of radioactivity with each drop? And I presume there's also a great deal of methane deposits they could disturb and release. Not a very awesome thing, I would imagine. The price for failure of this plan is pretty staggering, and that failure will go on for many decades if not centuries. The US government won't be nuking this thing anyway for other reasons, so the point is moot. Capping the well with a housing is a fine enough plan, it will just take time and unfortunately the surrounding environment will suffer in the mean time. Prince William Sound is still suffering some 20 years later.

We could pull a Bill Clinton and nuke Cuba "accidentally" in process.
