I've dealt with alcoholic employees who would get drunk at a bar on their breaks and bring alcohol and drink it on the job (and the stupid union shop stewards who refused to admit that they smelt the strong stench of alcohol on their breaths, the slurred speech, and the shambling walking). It's not good and it's not something that should be tolerated.
Unfortunately, it is legal so I'm afraid the rights of the company to control employment aren't as clear as with illegal substances.
