Quite, if they didn't believe they worked they wouldn't use them. A surprise or two (such as some of the shenanigans that banks have been accused of) can cause them to change that opinion.

Law firms have to do complex checks when they accept a new client to make sure that the other party in the case is not also one of their clients. If both clients waive the conflict, then they can accept the new client.

Note that I'm not an expert; I may have some details missing or incorrect.

Law firms only perform advisory work, and the potential conflicts are between parties in a given suit. IBs cannot, for example, advise both parties in a merger (I think?)
