You didn't know that the Austro-Hungarian empire was a dual monarchy? What the H has happened to education these days? Napoleon eliminated the Holy Roman Empire when he formed the Confederation of the Rhine. As compensation he allowed the Austrian Hapsburg monarch to re-style himself as Emporer of Austria, King of Hungary. During the age of revolutions the Hungarians won the right to have a seperate government, but one which was still under the rule of the Austrian emporer.
In 1878 Serbia won its independence from the Ottomans, cutting Bosnia - Herzegovina off from the rest of the Turkish empire. The Ottomans struck a deal with the Austrians that Austria would administer the area, but the Ottoman Empire would retain technical sovreignity. Eventually the Austrians said "Nuts" to that and unilaterally annexed the territory.
IIRC Joseph II tried to make German the language of common use throughout the empire, but the policy eventually had to be rescinded.
