  • Why do I have to pick between Unions and the Confederacy?

Jesus ****ing christ on a tandem bicycle. And I thought Bob McDonnell was actually pretty good for awhile. Especially with Creigh Deeds as the alternative.

Despite previous governors' refusals, McDonnell issues Confederate history month proclamation

Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) has quietly declared April 2010 Confederate History Month, bringing back a designation in Virginia that his two Democratic predecessors -- Mark Warner and Tim Kaine -- refused to do.

Republican governors George Allen and Jim Gilmore issued similar proclamations. But in 2002, Warner broke with their action, calling such proclamations, a "lightning rod" that does not help bridge divisions between whites and blacks in Virginia.

This year's proclamation was requested by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. A representative of the group said the group has known since it interviewed McDonnell when he was running for attorney general in 2005 that he was likely to respond differently than Warner or Kaine.

"We've known for quite some time we had a good opportunity should he ascend the governorship," Brandon Dorsey said. "We basically decided to bide our time and wait until we had more favorable politicians in Richmond."

Dorsey said the governor's stamp of approval would help the group publicize the month and aide tourism efforts in the state.

If we can accept that the North had slaves too, and the prevailing factors causing war were economic and of the typical Time Machine variety (ags vs. inds) then glorifying the south (or confeds) is not so terrible. Of course, if we brandy the north as freedom fighters and the south as barbarians, then the flag becomes offensive.

Determining the % of the civil war being based on freedom is like determining the % of climate change being anthropogenic, it mostly depends on who we ask. Kinda funny that one is past and the other future.

I commented to my older brother that he's at least done a good job of making sure the potholes get fixed after the big snowstorm to which he replied: "lol the trains run on time LOL"

Don't try and justify it. It's ****ing stupid from a political and policy perspective. End of story.

Recognizing the past is stupid? I guess the winners get to write history.

Honoring persecution is stupid. Think Nazi History Month vs. Holocaust Remembrance Month. This doesn't count as a Godwin because while slavery wasn't quite as outrageously horrific it was massive, institutionalized racial persecution all the same.

Think of the confeds as the Na'vi, not Na'zi. Those imperial sons of b1tches ruined their simple way of life with authority from the man.

It wasn't as widespread as some people would have you believe. About 10% of people had any slaves at all.

Strange how the highest tariff in history only caused the nullification crisis but some people attribute the civil war to a significantly lower tariff.
