I'm assuming we are adults (if he is a child, perhaps my criticism is too harsh), and children do not generally judge adults - they treat them as a higher caste. That's how scumbags manage to manipulate them. Therefore, I would not be surprised if then said scumbag turned around and insisted that everyone treat them as children do - because that's how they like it.

      Ashburn: "I am gay."

State Sen. Roy Ashburn, the Bakersfield Republican who was arrested in Sacramento last week on suspicion of drunk driving, came out as gay in a radio interview this morning.

"I am gay. And so, those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long," Ashburn told radio host Inga Banks on her show on the KERN station in Bakersfield.

The announcement follows days of intense scrutiny of Ashburn's personal life after he was arrested just after 2 a.m. on March 3. A Sacramento television station reported that Ashburn was at a popular gay dance club that night and several people have said they have seen the senator at gay bars in the city.

His sexual orientation is at issue because Ashburn has one of the staunchest records of voting against bills that would expand rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Californians.

Ashburn did not specifically say that he was at a gay club the night of his arrest, but said, "through my own actions I made my personal life public."

He defended his voting record, saying he cast votes that his constituents wanted. Ashburn represents the 18th Senate District, which covers a huge swath of the central and southern part of the state.

"I felt my duty, and I still fell this way, is to represent my constituents," Ashburn said, adding later that "I don't think it's something that has affected or will affect how I do my job."

The senator is expected to be back at the Capitol today when the Senate meets for a 2 p.m. floor session.

"I pray to God that I can find peace and I want to go back to work in the Senate and work hard for the people who sent me to the Legislature," he said.

He is personally a scumbag (for being such a self-loathing hypocrite), but that's a pretty good point.

Oerdin, people who automatically believe that Ashburn is not gay just because of his anti-gay voting record are kidding themselves.

He has serious self-acceptance issues, and instead of dealing with it, he has turned to hatred.

No commas and combine the sentences; otherwise, well said. I only correct because you seem decent.

Fact: People who use gay as a pejorative are either gay literally (and have not grown/woke up), have no concept of self-awareness or they are really worried about it for some reason (probably parental bigotry).

In a queer twist, California state senator Roy Ashburn confirmed to the press (KERN conservative talk radio in Bakersfield) today that he is gay.

"I am gay ... those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long," Ashburn told conservative talk show host Inga Barks.

The 55-year-old father of four said he had tried to keep his personal life separate from his professional life until his March 3 arrest.

"When I crossed the line and broke the law and put people at risk, that's different, and I do owe people an explanation," he said.

Not that it will change his anti-gay voting pattern...

"I felt my duty – and I still feel this way – is to represent my constituents, not my own point of view, not my own internal conflict," he told Barks.

He said he planned to continue voting on behalf of what he sees as the majority viewpoint in his district, which includes parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino counties.

Ashburn has been on personal leave since his arrest but was expected to return Monday to the Senate. His spokesman, Noel Libang, did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.

In the radio interview, Ashburn said he is drawing on his Christian faith, and he asked people to pray for him.

He said he does not plan to run for any public office after his term ends this year.

But at least he seems to have the decency not to run again.

This is pathetic. Too many Americans have a dysfunctional hang up when it comes to sex and sexuality in general.
