I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Asher's right. Nobody would ever use an airliner as a missile. It can't be done...

I can state it as a fact that a wide-body airliner 20km from a moving ship at sea, and 14,000 feet in the air in level flight, is not an immediate risk for a kamikaze attack.

Just another set of trigger-happy Americans killing people they can't yet see.

They had conflicting information some of which indicated that the plane was decending.

I think he was being sarcastic.

Descending from 14k, 20km out. They could have waited.

And I'm just curious, how ****ing inept is the radar operator if he mistakes the cross-section of a giant widebody airliner with an F-14?

If it was an F-14, as they claimed they thought it was, why would its descent matter? It doesn't fire at ships with cannons, for **** sakes.

The official story is they thought it was an F-14. Amazingly inept.

What is significant about that day?

I'm pretty sure there's no precedent for a Kamikaze wide-body passenger airliner into a moving, heavily-armed (with ample point defense) Navy ship.

Having worked on point defense weapons, they are pretty useless against large, incoming, piloted aircraft.

Point defense doesn't blow up missiles, it damages the airframe and allows air to do the job.

                      ACK!

airplane doors first have to move inwards a bit before they move outward. The internal pressure at cruising altitude is too much for even a very strong person to overcome.

All these posts and not a single complete answer. The doors are designed to not open during flight because if you could open them the gremlin would come inside and use the lavatory. After which the toilet would no longer function. That would be a bad thing and thus the design of the aircraft door.

My friend is a LtCmd retired. He was a Lt at the time, and he/they knew it was an airliner and they knew he was not at proper flight level from the airfield that he took off from.

On March 17, 1965, I had 9 days left in the Navy. I was on a bus from LBNSY to Long Beach. I was sitting next to a Gunner Mate 2nd Class (E-5) who was station on the USS Tunner Joy. He said that he was the gun capt. on no. 1 turret. The NVA T Boat was 12 miles or 24 thousand yards away and he fired 3 rounds. The first round, just aft of the boat, the 2nd round just in front of the boat, and the 3rd round in the middle of the boat. The Russian Torp. of the day was good for 6,000 yards per my neighbor who was Code 190 Combat sys at MISNY. LBJ said the NVA fired a Torp at us. Oh well. The offical version is never the real on the scene version.
