But the answer to such a percieved problem isn't the reforms that have been proposed thus far.

That's not perceived, it's a fact. The US does spend huge amounts of money on vastly inflated insurance bills.

The cynical view is that since Massachusetts already has a system similar to what Congress is proposing, to vote against it is clearly in their self interest, since they get the benefits of health care reform without having to foot the bill for other states.

If by "cynical" you mean "correct", then this is exactly right.

You might want to read up on your history. Although the French allowed the colonists to win the we successfully defended the West Indies (which is where all our money came from) against a larger French fleet, then defeated them repeatedly at sea leading to Trafalgar, the peninsular war and ultimately Waterloo.

And the colonists we lost to were previously British anyway and therefore England was only defeated by England.

You're misleadingly conflating two different wars. Great Britain clearly lost the Revolutionary War and ceded territory to the United States, France and Spain.
