Great interceptor. At a heady Mach 2, the Avro Arrow would have been a whole Mach 1 slower than the Valkyrie.

Which came out over 5 years later for 10x the price.

The mk2 was supposed to be "faster than Mach 2", but was cancelled for political reasons before it could try.

I think you're confusing Spitfire with Hurricane.

The interceptor and the bomber were on the same side.

Also, the interceptor doesn't need to chase the bomber down. It just needs to get in between the bomber and the target.

For now the F-22 would be the best. The F-22 has flew against everything we have and has not lost to any other Aircraft. Of couse we are not shooting live Missiles or guns.

For its time and place I would say the F-15. Built to exceed the expected capabilities of the MIG-25, it not only succeeded but when the MIG-25 was found to be a paper tiger the US was left with a fighter that completely outclassed any rival.

Introduced in 1976, it ruled pretty much unchallenged until the intruduction of the SU-27 in 1984which was someehat of an equal. While I think the F-22 has a larger edge over potential adversaries than the F-15 did then, taking into account what was actually going on in 1976-1984 the edge the F-15 had was far more relevant.
