Day trading is an incredibly bad idea. It's not particularly different from gambling.

I agree. But the point remains true.

If you DO happen to time it right, you can make a fortune. It's just too risky.

      • If you happen to get absurdly lucky on the lottery you can make a fortune. But the payoff does not offset the risk.

        • I do take "overvalued" to mean a stock is likely to fall significantly before it rises significantly - which, I acknowledge, is what happened here. I'm not trying to pick a fight with you; I just posted the AAPL quarterlies because they were, in fact, quite outstanding.

I remembered the argument being about the $130-150 range (which is what I was referring to with "at that point", above). That memory was obviously inaccurate. Not surprising, since I couldn't even remember what year it happened. Or Agathon's name, for that matter. Damn, I'm getting pretty feeble in my dotage...

Speaking of which, what I really want is Steve Jobs' expiration date so I can short the stock like crazy.

          • I am very sad to see Asher arguing about economics based on his extensive experience designing restaurant applications. Just because a stock dips before tripling in value in less than two years does not mean it was overvalued.

I spent two and a half years implementing trade workflow systems and risk analysis systems. Much of those times were implementing risk models developed by people like KH.

What do you think risk models do for investment banks, Wiggy?

Now I'm not saying I'm an expert in the field, but you're the one that keeps busting out the fact that I work for a marketing company now. Seems fair play to mention my 2 1/2 years spent working for a massive investment bank doing risk systems.

                  • SUCK ON THIS, WIGLAF. :furious:

Reading on iPad before bed can affect sleep habits

Apple's iPad can do movies, music, e-mail, apps and rich Web browsing. And of course, e-books. Should Amazon just put its comparably basic e-reader, the Kindle, to sleep?

Not so fast. Sleep experts say using the iPad before bed can affect sleeping habits unlike most other e-readers.

The difference? Devices like the Kindle, the Nook (the top part of the screen that displays books) and popular e-readers from Sony use a technology called e-paper. It simulates the look of an actual printed page and does not emit light. That means, unlike the iPad, you can effectively read in direct sunlight. (Beach, anyone?)

The iPad, however, contains a touchscreen liquid-crystal display that, like computer screens and television sets, emits light. On the plus side, you can sneak the device under the covers while your significant other sleeps beside you and flip through a couple pages of a book without a flashlight.

But staring at the screen before bed could leave you lying awake. That's because direct exposure to such abnormal light sources inhibits the body's secretion of melatonin, say several sleep experts.

If you've watched any late-night TV, you've no doubt heard the term thrown around in commercials for sleeping pills. Melatonin signals are sent through the brain as a response to darkness, telling the body to prepare to shut down for the night.

Light-emitting devices, including cellphones and yep, the iPad, tell the brain to stay alert. Because users hold those devices so close to their face, staring directly into the light, the effect is amplified compared with, say, a TV across the room or a bedside lamp, said Frisca Yan-Go, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center in Santa Monica.

Some say e-ink is easier on the eyes than the screen on a computer (tablet or otherwise). However, the Wall Street Journal published a report this month to the contrary.

Yan-Go was eager to point out the advantages of books over e-readers. Paper books are often lighter; they can be dropped when you doze off holding them; and if they get wet, it's not the end of the world. And they won't mess with your sleep cycle.

"The take-home lesson is that insomnia and electronics gadgets emitting light should not [be] mixed before bedtime," UCLA Neurology Clinic Director Alon Avidan, also an associate professor at the university, wrote in an e-mail. However, "Kindle is better for your sleep," he wrote in another e-mail.

                    • What A JOKE PLEASE. Everyone browses the internet before sleep, myself included, and I have no problems sleeping These researchers are probably philosophy major rejects who have abacuses in the back pocket of their faded jeans. This in particular is nonsensical:

Light-emitting devices, including cellphones and yep, the iPad, tell the brain to stay alert. Because users hold those devices so close to their face, staring directly into the light, the effect is amplified compared with, say, a TV across the room or a bedside lamp, said Frisca Yan-Go, director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center in Santa Monica.
Frisca Yan-Go? We are going to trust HER to tell us what is AMPLIFIED? What a joke, that she is quoted as an expert.

                      A) She's never used a computer or if she has, it's just been to stalk the husband that left her after she started looking like this. http://www.uclahealth.org/providerphotos/YanGo_02.jpg

                      B) She graduated from "University of Santo Tomas" with an MD. That is one of those schools that you go to when the police find out you killed someone and you need to get a degree under an assumed identity.

NEWSFLASH BEING IN A LIGHTED ROOM ALSO TRIGGERS MELANIN! NOT LOOKING DIRECTLY AT LIGHT, BUT BEING IN A ****ING LIT ROOM WHICH YOU NEED TO READ E-INK!! SORRY YAN-GO! GOOGLE PROVES YOU ARE A FRAUD! Since when are people admitted to UCLA as having a sleep disorder suddenly experts.

                      I missed this too:

I spent two and a half years implementing trade workflow systems and risk analysis systems. Much of those times were implementing risk models developed by people like KH.
What ANOTHER JOKE. Stop using the word "workflow." It is obnoxious and means nothing. Everyone has a workflow. You designed software and were fired after you ruined an investment bank with your bare hands.
