  • Air France may bar obese passengers from flights

Air France has revealed it may prevent obese economy passengers from boarding its planes for "safety reasons".

It said that, under new rules, if a flight was full an overweight person who did not fit into a single seat might have to take another plane.

It made the admission when it said obese people buying two seats for more comfort would be fully reimbursed for the second if the plane was not full.

This new rule comes into effect from 1 February.

At present Air France offers heavier passengers 25% off the price of buying an adjacent seat, a policy that has been in effect since 2005.

The airline said it had no intention of forcing heavier passengers to pay for a second seat.

Air France is part of Air France-KLM, the largest airline group in Europe by revenue.

    Why is this news?

      Those rules seem pretty reasonable.
If I have to pay extra to bring my golf clubs along, why shouldn't someone have to pay for bringing extra fat along.
I remember one flight when a 300+ pound guy sat down in the middle seat and asked if it was ok if I would raise the divider between our seats so he could use part of my space. (yeah like that was going to happen) The guy on the other side declined the same offer.

I don't see why obese people shouldn't have to pay full price for an extra seat, regardless of whether or not the plane is full. Air France is already being more generous than need be.

They're not all that generous, really. Unless you're travelling in business class or you bought your ticket late, you're often paying more money in taxes and fees than the netto seat price, and I doubt any passenger could be charged double regarding those costs.

But that's just my nitpicking. I still agree that if you need two seats for whichever reason, you should be paying more than the rest of us.
