World’s oldest porn shop to shut

Blue Movie has been providing blue material since 1964 but is soon to close following financial troubles.
The owners of the world’s oldest sex shop in Copenhagen have announced it will close at the end of March - not due to the impact of the internet as expected, but partly because of bike lanes.
Blue Movie once had the world’s largest collection of adult material and, since its opening in 1964 four years before Denmark legalised pornography, has been the world’s oldest existing pornography shop.
The shop has been open for 45 years and at its Vesterbrogade street location since 1972. Owner Jesper Strauss, who inherited the shop from his father, said the internet did not impact on the shops fortunes as much as expected.
‘When porn became easily accessible we changed the company profile so that we specialised in more unique interests…Even though you can get this on the internet many people won’t use their home computer for it. They’re afraid of viruses, spam and most of all, the wife finding it,’ Strauss told Urban newspaper.
According to the shop owner, it’s the effect of the recession, increasing shop rents and bicycle lanes that have influenced the company’s financial downturn the most.
‘Customers can’t park anywhere since they built bike lanes everywhere and the effects of the recession can really be felt. You can’t skimp on milk and bread, but you can save on porn during times of crisis,’ he said.
Strauss has suggested that the National Museum might be interested in preserving part of the store, similar to when a display was created using a hash stand from Christiania.
‘They could easily display a couple of film booths. It’s an important part of Danish history that otherwise will end up in the rubbish bin.’
The shop’s entire inventory will be on sale at a 60 percent discount until the shop closes on March 31.
