But you don't need christianity at all to be perfect.

Kid is clearly saying that claiming to believe in what MLK stood for while ignoring the Christian bent of MLK's teachings is as stupid as claiming to believe in what Christ stood for while ignoring the aspects of Christianity that you don't like. Basically, Kid is bemoaning the existence of people like MrFun.

Have you ever met a perfect person? Please refrain from the obvious wiseass remarks about looking in the mirror, etc...personally, I don't think this is the result of de-christianizing MLK's message. It's the result of MLK having been dead for about 40 years, so that his influence is much lower among today's youth. The civil rights movement has largely won, at least in terms of political rights, and there just haven't been many people that classy. Most protesters today seem to be more in the mold of Code Pink.

            Dashi and MrFun,

Who said anything about perfect? The point that I'm trying to make is that kids today don't go to church, so all they are taught about morals is from school and their sinner parents (or parents that say they are christian but don't really even try). Obviously, this isn't enough if we want to have a civilized society.

I blaim the whole society for this, but mostly it's the churches fault.

How do you know the people who got in the fights weren't Christians?

              This is a stupid thread.

Yes, we can look back to the time when everyone went to church. It was much more civilized, what with the burning of "witches" and "heretics," the crusades against "infidels," the pogroms against Jews, the fair and equitable treatment of women, and so on. Good times, good times.

Why? It's not a valid argument. Dr. King didn't claim to be divine, unlike Jesus supposedly did, and there's no reason you can't agree with King on issues of equal rights and justice while not sharing the same religious beliefs he had.

If you don't share Dr. King's religious beliefs, then there's no way you can accept the intellectual justification for his views on issues like equal rights and justice. Your position is intellectually bankrupt.

This falsely assumes there can be only one intellectual justification for the same or similar views.

Your point is still in error.

I'm relatively confident that your case for equal rights and justice is that striving for them is the "moral" thing to do, with no real intellectual justification for why your concept of morality should be given credence over anyone else's or why we should believe that morality is something we should even concern ourselves with. Dr. King's views had none of these problems.
