  • Am I the only one who thinks Tablet PCs are useless?

I like the concept of a small portable computing device but other then surfing the net what exactly are we supposed to do with them? OK, they have a touch screen and that does have some initial "oh, wow" factor but once that wears off I'm left wondering why I would want one and what we're supposed to be doing with them.

Play music? Sorry but most mobile phones already do that well and they're a lot smaller. Watch movies? Why would we want to watch them on a small screen when most Americans already have a 40" flat screen HDTV at home with a better sound system? Mobile typing? The touch screen without a key board just doesn't seem as efficient as a laptop plus the laptop would no doubt be much more capable. Then there is the fact that those uncovered tablet screens aren't protected like a laptop's screen is so you just know they're going to get scratched up when people put them in back packs or brief cases or what not.

So other then Tablets just being the new tech thing why should a consumer buy one? What is its niche? What exactly does it do better then the other items people already own?

They're a niche product so far... Rumour as it that Apple will come up with one at the end of month. Maybe it'll be a game changer, or maybe not... We'll see

Yeah, I read about Apple coming out with a tablet and that's what prompted this thread. I mean even if Apple makes the world's best Tablet I'm still wondering exactly what someone is supposed to do with a Tablet which can't be done better (faster & more efficiently) on a device most people already own (like a laptop, PC, or mobile phone).

Answer: No, but you're all very wrong.

My company owns 5,000 tablet PCs. The sales force use them, and they are very awesome for that. They sign customers up using the forms, they can fill things out on the laptop then swivel the display down and everyone can then sign the forms digitally on the tablet PC. Customers love it, it lowers cost (paperless transactions), it speeds everything up.

My brother used a tablet PC as a mechanical engineering student at school. He used it to take all of his class notes and share them with friends, and had a great experience with it (especially when used with OneNote, which does optical character recognition (OCR) on handwritten notes automatically).

Are they useful for overweight hipster geologists with porn addictions? Probably not. But they're far from useless.

You also seem to be confusing Tablet PCs (which are usually laptops with a swivel-display that is touch/multitouch enabled) with Slate PCs and devices like Apple's rumoured device, which are keyboardless devices.

The utility for those are probably more limited. They'd be useful for forms (why fill out paper forms and scan them, eg for medical offices/hospitals), casual web surfing on the couch (where you don't type much), etc.

I'm 5'10, 163 lbs at the moment and that's from going to the gym 4 days a week for over a year.

I could see myself using OneNote with one of those... Or even reading PDF's. Not sure I would enjoy writing on it though. The surface is probably too smooth for my taste. OTOH, if the screen had the same texture as paper...

I think iSlate is going to be a couch device, not something you will lug around. Lie down on the sofa, read a book, read some websites, watch funny cats on Youtube, order a movie to watch on your HD TV...

Many of the new HDTVs already have the ability to download and store content on demand so what is the advantage to using the iSlate or other such device?

It was just an idea: better UI for doing the same thing.

Tablets are awesome. Look at how ancient Mesopotamians used clay tablets.
