Mom: Some Republicans asked *your aunt* to run because she is more conservative than the Republican appointee she would be replacing.
Me: Out of curiosity why is it important what the political affiliation of a County Judge is?
Mom: ....well I don't know exactly. Hmmm. I guess it's just always better to have conservatives!
Me: *facepalm*

The above is just about an ironclad argument against the universal franchise. How 'bout you know what you're voting for before you cast the vote?

This always fascinated me about USA. There are some sort of elections for
judges and sheriffs, right?

Here the judges are appointed by the state and have a lifetime (I think) term.

Our system sucks, but I don't see how letting them be elected by popular
vote would be any better. Gregarious and superficial fellows win elections.
I want judges to be silent, smart, nerdy types who know the law.
