He served five tours in Vietnam and is the only soldier in our nation's history to be nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor three times for three separate actions within a thirteen month period. Although it can only be awarded once to an individual, men who served with him said he deserved all three. He received a direct appointment from Master Sergeant to 1st Lieutenant in 1969, and was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard M. Nixon at the White House in 1971. The only person officially recognised as having survived both atomic bombings in Japan at the end of World War II has died from stomach cancer, aged 93.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip on 6 August 1945 when a US plane dropped the first atomic bomb.

He suffered serious burns and spent a night there before returning to his home city of Nagasaki just before it was bombed on 9 August.

He said he hoped his experience held a lesson of peace for future generations.

It was already recorded that Mr Yamaguchi had survived the Nagasaki bomb, but in March last year officials recognised he had been in Hiroshima as well.

A handful or Japanese people are known to have lived through both attacks, but Mr Yamaguchi is the only one formally recognised by the Japanese government to have done so.


Certification as a hibakusha or radiation survivor qualifies Japanese citizens for government compensation, including medical check-ups, and funeral costs.

On learning of his official recognition last year, Mr Yamaguchi said: "My double radiation exposure is now an official government record.

"It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die."

In his later years, Mr Yamaguchi gave talks about his experiences as an atomic bomb survivor and emphasised his hope nuclear weapons would be abolished.

About 140,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki.

Survivors fell sick with radiation-related illnesses, including cancers, for years after the bombings.

The Mainichi newspaper reported that last month Mr Yamaguchi was visited in hospital by James Cameron, the director of Titanic and Avatar, who is apparently considering making a film about the bombings.

Commenting on Mr Yamaguchi's death, the mayor of Nagasaki said on the city's website that "a precious storyteller has been lost".

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Teddy Pendergrass, who became R&B's reigning sex symbol in the 1970s and '80s with his forceful, masculine voice and passionate love ballads and later became an inspirational figure after suffering a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59.

The singer's son, Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died at a hospital in suburban Philadelphia. The singer underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had "a difficult recovery," his son said.

"To all his fans who loved his music, thank you," his son said. "He will live on through his music."

January 19, 2010 - You might remember her as one half of the McGarrigle Sisters, or you might know her as the mother of two more contemporary musicians, Martha and Rufus Wainwright. Canadian folk icon Kate McGarrigle died Monday of cancer at her home in Montreal. She was 63.

Kate McGarrigle came from one of those rare families that actually sing at home. The French-Canadian sisters with the distinctive last name tapped into a deep vein of folk music running north up the range of the Appalachians past the New Brunswick-Quebec border.

It's true. Divorce and trying times go hand in hand but rarely does one partner attempt to split from another while on his deathbed.

That's what's happening with Dennis Hopper. The Hollywood actor said Monday that he is seeking a divorce from his fifth wife, Victoria Duffy-Hopper, while fighting an increasingly grim battle against prostate cancer.

In a statement, Hopper said, "I wish Victoria the best but only want to spend these difficult days surrounded by my children and close friends."

The 73-year-old actor announced his cancer diagnosis in September 2009. He and Duffy-Hopper, who married in 1996, have a 6-year-old daughter, Galen. Hopper also has three other children from previous marriages.

In a statement to Reuters, Hopper's oldest daughter, Marin, said, "Dennis is brave, and he is fighting a hell of a battle."
