Probably not going to see "Sherlock Holmes"

I saw it yesterday with my family...brother, his fiancee, mum and dad and my partner.

We all loved it.

My dad and I are massive fans of the books and the ITV TV adaptations as Jeremy Brett is the one true Holmes.

I thought the pace of the film was really good, no chance of being bored. It felt like a proper Sherlock Holmes adventure and paid homage to so many aspects of his character. It was gritty...the problem with many Americans is they think of this time period as genteel when it was anything but. The scenes were interesting and the atmosphere was excellent.

Really enjoyed the dialogue, many funny exchanges. Shockingly this was the first film that had Jude Law in it that I thought he actually did a good job in!

Ah well. Needless to say it was my favorite film of 2009, topping Inglorious Barsterds which has just too many uncomfortable moments to be fully enjoyable.

Go and see it is my recommendation

It was meh.

The twist was... well, not a twist, given that Doyle used one exactly like it about fifteen times. And the rest of the movie was just kind of not-Sherlock-Holmesey.

I love the way all the complaints are about this movine being un-Conan Doylish, yet the totally Conan Doylish story-turn is also denounced.

It's legitimate to call out a story for mainly borrowing the parts of a work that weren't interesting.

I'm curious: If this were not drawing on the "Sherlock Holmes" but was just presented as a Victorian-era detective/buddy/action flick, would that change your opinion?

Almost certainly. I'd think, "huh, a retarded action movie set in a weird era. Maybe they'll have a chase scene on those unevenly-wheeled bikes? Eh, it has RDJr. so it might be worth seeing anyway."

I doubt that Downey's Sherlock Holmes has as much reasoning and gravitas as Lt. Cmdr. Data's Sherlock Holmes.

A good, fun movie. Clearly lots of fantastical crap thrown in and interesting unlikelihoods like how they could get from the Houses of Parliament to Tower Bridge by running for a few minutes in a sewer...:hmm:

Clearly primed for a sequel. Talking of RDJ sequels, I noticed the Iron Man 2 poster in the foyer of the cinema already...

If it weren't called Sherlock Holmes I would just be confused by it. The movie tries hard to convince us that it is, in fact, a detective story, but the pacing is totally wrong.
