  • Should America ditch Pakistan for India?

Normally I think Hitchens is loathsome, but here's an article of his that I agreed with.

This will continue to get nastier and more corrupt and degrading until we recognize that our long-term ally in Asia is not Pakistan but India. And India is not a country sizzling with self-pity and self-loathing, because it was never one of our colonies or clients. We don't have to send New Delhi 15 different envoys a month, partly to placate and partly to hector, because the relationship with India isn't based on hysteria and envy. Alas, though, we send hardly any envoys at all to the world's largest secular and multicultural democracy, and the country itself gets mentioned only as an afterthought. Nothing will change until this changes.

It's clear to anybody paying attention that Pakistan has no real interest in fighting the Afghan Taliban. The ISI has no interest in helping their American "ally." And Pakistan, through A. Q. Khan, is responsible for nuclear proliferation.

India is a democracy, a credible check against Chinese hegemony, and is experiencing rapid economic growth. Why is America still supporting a treacherous leech, when we have much more in common with their chief rival? The Pakistani alliance is a Cold War relic, dating back to India's refusal to be involved in a superpower struggle. Now that India is on the ascent, it is increasingly likely that they will want the stability and security that a deeper relationship with the West would bring.

I am aware that India is not the perfect republic that Hitchens makes it out to be. There are restrictions on Hindus converting to other faiths, and their political system is full of corruption and petty self interest. No country is perfect though, and if our strategic goals are similar (fighting Islamic terrorism, and preventing Chinese domination) then it makes sense that we would strengthen ties.

The only real question then is what to do with Pakistan. They are still a nuclear power, and a dangerous and deranged one at that. Should we ignore them, and hope that the problem goes away? Should we tie a peace settlement in Kashmir to increasing our support for India in Arunachal Pradesh? Would that work, or would it be as impossible as a peace deal in Israel?
    John Brown did nothing wrong.

You reap what you sow. The US is more than a little responsible for the ****hole Pakistan has become.

How surprising that a Brit would try to push the blame for Pakistan off onto America...

        I'll ignore the obvious troll...

The US undermined Pakistani democracy by renting the P- military for a decade (through Musharrif) to wage war on it's own citizens.

I think the timing now would be exceedingly poor. The majority of supplies for American troops currently "(in-)surging" in Afghanistan go through Karachi onto soft trucks on poor roads through ambivalent Pakistani tribal areas over narrow mountain passes to the American bases. Ironically, the bribes that are paid out to leave this fragile line (relatively) unmolested are a big source of funding for the Taliban.

And as for flying things in,

The logistical challenges intersect at Bagram Airfield, outside Kabul. A former Soviet base, Bagram is the main supply, personnel and medical hub for the war effort. "The facility here is the central hub for the development of governance and security in Afghanistan. What I mean by that is, everything that comes into Afghanistan comes in through air, if it has any short-term requirement," said Kwast, who oversees air operations at the base.

The passenger terminals and cargo yards are filled to capacity, "Each day we move approximately 4,000 passengers a day, inbound and outbound, plus 400 tons of cargo per day," said Lt. Col. Dan Krall, a logistician working under Kwast.

Medical infrastructure represents another problem. With mounting casualties, Bagram's military hospital, the biggest in Afghanistan, is working overtime. Hospital commander Col. Joe Chozinski says emergency cases are up five times compared to last year. "In any given month we see 3 to 4,000 people. To compare us to something in the United States. If you look at the number of patients, the number of surgeries and how critical they are, we're equivalent to about the busiest trauma center in the entire United States," he said.

India is obviously not an option if the Pakistanis would shut off Karachi to American ships, and I can scarce think of alternatives. Iran or Russia, anyone? In an ideal world, most people would strongly prefer the DisUnited States of India over the Military Republic of Pakistan, but switching support on them is not on the table. In 5-10 years though, maybe.

You Brits created the problem in the first place through your asinine partition of India. How many millions of people have died on the sub-continent due to your colonial maneuverings?

Nice try, Drake, but we don't have any residual guilt in the national consciousness over India just because we're white Commonwealth.

I know full well that the British don't feel any guilt for their colonial legacy, as shameful as it is.

American's won't even admit to their colonial legacy.

The British don't have any guilt because they're so goddamn enamoured with the way they carried the White Man's Burden.

We don't have any guilt because we were just useful footsoldiers. Anyhow, we were better at killing Germans than oppressing the brown people.
