I can't stand cracks. This was in a pretty bad spot, right in front of the driver. I was more worried that when it starts sleeting that the ice would crack open the window.

mine was more of a small BB type size with the cracks extending less that the size of a penny and it was not quite in direct line. The filler they used make all the cracks disappear so it really hasn't bothered me. But your's sounds like it was considerably bigger.

It scared the crap out of me when it happened. Coming around a bend it I could see it flying of the truck going the other way, and wham! I thought it was going to come through.

At least I'll get to class on time.

Yeah, I can imagine. With mine it was just a tiny pebble kicked up by a semi. But it was one of those weird things when you see the whole thing in slow motion but since it was a crowded 2 lane highway there was no way to avoid it. My truck was only a few months old so it was the first DING. Pissed me off.

There was a pin sized hole that came through to the inside. I've filled chips before, and this was no chip. The "chip" was big enough to put your knuckle in, the shatter "spread" was about 2 inches. I asked about repair when I called and when the service guy showed up, and the both said it couldn't be repaired.

After the guy was done he was told me not to drive it for 1-2 hours. WTF?! That would have been nice to know BEFORE you did the work. What if I had to be somewhere? Seriously, I am sick of stupidness.

He probably thought it was pretty obvious. Its something they say but I'm betting the reality is that they figure that half the people ignore it. I am thinking the main risk would come from a hard stop or hard cornering but even then I don't think it would be that easy to do damage

All I can say is what sheltered lives you lead when it comes to rocks flying on roads. The gravel they use in the winter means there are lots of rocks everywhere and most windshields will suffer through5-10 decent dings before you go for replacement. Eventually one of them is big enough or starts to crack enough that its simply prudent.

But you KNOW within a week or two of getting a new windshield, that something will "christen" it.

The gravel they use on the roads in MTL (generally mixed with salt) is too small to chip a windshield. It's pretty normal in the winter to get them bouncing off your windshield, but I've never actually seen one leave a mark.

We use lots of gravel here, but it's the highway driving that does it. I got 4 good dings once during one drive here from Calgary. I never got that one replaced though

A couple of years ago I hydroplaned on the highway due to a sudden downpour, and the front of my car got pretty banged up. On the bright side, the cracked front badge was no longer an issue.
