My roommate's dog is constantly digging in the kitchen trash. She's knocked it over on several occasions, spilling the contents, and has now broken the lid off. What should we do to help control the behavior?

That's a brilliant idea.
We've got a low-powered pellet gun that was bought as part of a Halloween costume.
Also got the 12-gauge and the 30-06.
30-06 is a no go, on account of it being illegal to fire a rifle like that around here.
I've accidentally discharged the 12-gauge in the house before, a load of 7.5. Nobody called the cops. So if I really wanted to get the dog's attention, I could theoretically do that. But I think that even bird-shot is a bit excessive. And I'm a guy who wishes that every problem could be solved with shotguns.
The pellet gun is the only acceptable option. Maybe if we could get a paint ball gun and somehow got stinky paint balls, that would be cool.
