(Geek, well, fantasy) Literature thread

When I were a wee lad, I once read some of a series of fantasy novels, and would be interested in reading them again (to see if my degree in literature and adult midset would make a difference), but I can't remember the titles or even author.

(Definite spoilers ahead)

They concerned an average schmoe from America somewhere who had a fatal disease but was transported to a fantasy world wherein he fought to do good and beat the baddie. Etc.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm on about?
