As usual, you are wrong. Sometimes you act like Sloww - way too triggerhappy.

Perhaps you can explain again how you can compress a lightly correlated stream of random real numbers.
Didn't know that you were masochistic - it wasn't me that had a problem in that thread.

      • I would like to see a robust discussion between the 'Bama boy and the quant.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Or will you then claim he was wrongly fired?

I'm just trying to determine how airtight your position is.

The water cycle lasts only a couple of months IIRC. Adding "fresh water" has no meaning. All water in the atmosphere is fresh. There's nothing magic about fresh water "locked in" glaciers. As sea levels rise I would expect that the oceans would become less saline (very slightly less) but I have no idea what the effect on fresh water supplies would be. Making a statement about fresh water involves knowledge of rainfall patterns, river flows etc.
That would make sense in the absence of planet wide warming. If glaciers were melted due to local factors, but the planet itself was not any warmer, I'd agree with you that it would just be a drop in the ocean. But a warmer planet should have warmer air, and warmer air retains more moisture than cold air. So the total water in the atmosphere should increase, right?

I realize this is all very simplistic, but I just never read anything but apocalyptic predictions in the press. And the skeptics are so hung up on trying to dispute that the planet is getting warm at all, that they're just completely worthless.

Yes, of course. But why would you expect that this would mean higher rainfall? Rainfall is not a statement about absolute levels of water in atmosphere, but instead is a statement about flow.

The analogy I just thought of is a garden hose; fresh water supplies depend on how much water flows through the hose, not how much water is IN the hose.

                  • By the way, I'm much less certain that the science on rainfall effects is well understood than is the science on a robust variable like temperature.

                            • I don't particularly care if you're polite. I care about the opinion of people I respect, and I have absolutely no respect for you. You're stupid and incapable of admitting that you're wrong, even when faced with overwhelming proof.

As for why I roll my eyes at your link, the blog you linked to is populated by a bunch of conspiracy-mongering idiots, and this is one more dumbass conspiracy they've come up with. The best way for Google to filter the content that people get is to subtly manipulate their autocomplete feature, then when some dude on a website calls them up they realize the jig's up and change things back before the **** can hit the fan? I mean, the post is an interesting glimpse inside the head of somebody completely divorced from reality, but as a statement on the issue itself it's meaningless.
