  • *sigh* Virus problem, help requested

Being an idiot I, took some files home from a public work computer on a USB chip and put the files onto my home computer before scanning them and now my home comp is pretty badly ****ed up. I bought it for $800 in the spring of 2006 so I'll have to buy a new one pretty soon anyway, but I'd like to save this one if possible.

    OK, here's what's up:
-When IE is loaded (I didn't notice this until it was too late since I almost always use FireFoX) is says "hacked by *name of work computer*" After doing some searches, it sounded like the Godzilla virus but the instructions told me to delete .dll files that aren't on my computer so I'm pretty confused.

-Then the sound stopped working and the computer says that I have no audio device.

-To try to fix that I downloaded and started to install new drivers but right in the middle of the download the computer suddenly turned off and when I rebooted it the internet wouldn't work and the computer couldn't find any network device (as in, apparently the computer things that my modem doesn't exist).

-I found and deleted some malware files in the windwos/system32 directory but I think the damage was already done at that point.

I tried going to a whole bunch of websites to get instructions about how to fix it, but I couldn't get them to work in time before the virus killed my internet.

    Help!

How to go about this? I THINK I've deleted the actual files with my virus scanner once I figured out how to find them, its just that they've nuked my internet and sound before I could get rid of them...

Yeah, that'd probably work but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do short of that, I've got bunches of files on it that I'd like to avoid deleting, some of which aren't even porn

Build a Bart PE installation using an XP cd, boot from the Bart PE CD, move the files you want to save to an external HD, then boot from the XP CD, choose to repair your existing installation, if that fails then reinstall. Here's a Bart PE installation that's already got crap like USB drivers on it.

You can also put virus scanners and whatnot on the Bart PE installation. If you're using UBCD4Win then be sure to update the virus scanners ahead of time as you may not have internet access (either because you don't have the drivers on the CD or because you're computer is mucked up).

If you can't boot up, maybe try a book disk with a file recovery program.

Will format the hard drive if I have to but want to try every option first.

Booting up works fine, in fact everything works perfectly fine (if a little slower) except for the sound and the internet. I can even play Civ So I think there's still at least some home to avoid the bother of formatting.

Boot in safe mode with networking.

You may have internet access in that mode, and then may use some online tools to try to recover windows.
