I figured I'd respond to this in a new thread, so as not to sully the Remembrance Day thread...

In a very real sense, our country won its true independence from Great Britain by fighting Germans on the fields of France and Belgium.

Dude, what are you talking about? In a very real sense, Canada is not independent of Great Britain at all. You've got the British Queen on all your money, for god's sake. It's an insult to real independence to refer to Canada's loose colonial status with Great Britain as such.

I understand Loyalists like bc1871 better than I understand you. He clearly enjoys his status as a Canadian subject of the British Crown, but you seem to be proud to be Canadian and yet in denial about what that actually entails. You're simply not independent of Great Britain, which is really the only difference between Americans and Canadians.

I'm not saying that. I'm fine with Canadians remaining part of the British orbit if that's what they want. I just find it annoying when Canadians claim to have been earning their independence from Britain or other such nonsense when they were really just fighting for the glory of the British Empire like the Aussies, Kiwis, Indians, etc. They remain a part of the British Empire (under its new name) to this very day.
