  • Blaut

Imagine there was an American geography prof having "Blaut" as surname. How in hell would that be pronounced correctly?

Like 'blowed' just with 't'??? Or how else?

No wonder the guy is already dead.

I would pronounce that the way you pronounce the O in plow.

German surnames are common in America. We're not as dumb as you think we are.

I thought you'd 'anglify' everything. Like the (German) guy appearing sometimes on CNN International. He always sounds like an American, even when talking German stuff like city names. Maybe they told him to sound more 'international'

We do Anglicize quite a bit. Köln somehow becomes Cologne. My last name is Schwartz with a T. But that doesn't mean we're stupefied by a diphthong. Like Lori said, just about any literate American will pronounce "Blaut" with the same vowel sound as "plow."
