Men in Tights is the best of them. Picture the opening scene: the opening credits roll and a hail of fire arrows fly into a village. The villagers run out screaming and organise a fire brigade. Then one comments "there must be another way of doing the credits." The fire marshall replies "that's right. Every time they make a Robin Hood movie, they burn our village down!"
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

From that Wikipedia link:
The following April, director Ridley Scott was hired to helm Nottingham.[15] He had attempted to get rights for himself and 20th Century Fox, but had collaborated with Grazer on American Gangster and signed on as director rather than producer.[3] Scott was not a fan of previous film versions of Robin Hood, saying "the best, frankly, was Mel Brooks' Men in Tights, because Cary Elwes was quite a comic".[16]

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
I was actually watching Men in Tights a few days ago. It got me thinking that we're about due for a new version of Robin Hood. Will it be darker and gritier than that Costner atrocity?
Costner simply must be brought back. His occasional English accent was fantastic.
