Obama: Troop Decision Possible Before Afghan Run-off
    By Paula Wolfson
    Washington
    22 October 2009

U.S. President Barack Obama says he may make a decision on a revised Afghan strategy before that country's run-off presidential election on November 7. But Mr. Obama also says an announcement may wait until after the votes are in.

The president makes clear he believes the situation in Afghanistan is still fluid.

In an interview with NBC television he hinted there might be twists and turns ahead.

Mr. Obama was asked if the run-off could delay the release of his revised strategy for Afghanistan. "I think it is entirely possible that we have a strategy formulated before a run-off is determined. We may not announce it," he said.

The president has held a series of lengthy closed door meetings with his national security team on Afghanistan and Pakistan. Critics have alleged he is dragging out the decision-making process and needlessly putting American troops in danger.

President Obama made clear he would not be rushed, telling NBC he is taking the time to get the decision right. "We also want to make sure we don't put resources ahead of strategy," he said.

But he went on to say he understands the need to act in a timely fashion, saying the sooner a sound approach is in place, the better.

President Obama got a first hand report on the situation in Afghanistan Wednesday from Senator John Kerry - the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The Massachusetts Democrat met repeatedly in Kabul with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in the days leading up to the announcement that a run-off would be held.

Kerry told reporters as he left the White House that President Obama should wait for the election outcome before making up his mind on further troop deployments. "I think that as a matter of common sense that the president would feel that it makes sense to wait until the end of this two week period. Two weeks is a very short span of time, folks, to determine whether or not you have a government to work with in a war," he said.

Kerry was asked if he raised the idea of a coalition government with Hamid Karzai. He said the matter never came up, but added he believes there are ongoing discussions between President Karzai and his run-off challenger Abdullah Abdullah.
Nearly 2 months and counting waiting on a decision since the McChrystal report was delivered. If he's not committed to winning, he should just say so and begin a withdrawal. This dithering over making a decision while letting political opperatives within his Admin opine on the matter only serves to make him look weak.

I may be mistaken, but I believe this is your longest post ever.

I agree it makes him look weak, but I'd rather he wait and make the right decision than charge ahead with the wrong one. Perhaps if he just ignored the results of the recent election Karzai wouldn't have agreed to the run off?

Long posts are not signs of weakness.

They are. If you can't demonstrate that another poster is a **** in a paragraph or less, then you shouldn't be posting here.

I would hope that something is being gained by the delay. The "we want to take our time to make a correct decision" doesn't pass the sniff test. Maybe Obama is waiting for the latest offensive to play out in Pakistan.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Why would that matter? Pakistan isn't attacking the groups causing problems in Afghanistan.

                        Hillary's new replacement.

Between hubby Bill and now Kerry, she doesn't have much of a job left.
