The question is whether the government has widespread legitimacy issues, not simply whether it's "representative."
Any government that requires 200K foreign troops to keep from being toppled by its own citizens has serious legitimacy problems.

I've stated my preference for getting the **** out a number of times. A significant presence simply doesn't make sense from a cost-benefit perspective. Buy them off, and leave. But if you're going to do COIN, bolstering the legitimacy of the government is one of the highest priorities.

No, why would I want to argue your ridiclous point. As your definition states.

            1. to increase in intensity, magnitude, etc.: to escalate a war; a time when prices escalate.
Operations do that, not mere reinforcements. If we decided to conduct another Helmand type offensive THAT is escalaing the conflict. Simply securing our current positions is not.

The point being the General requested reinforcements not to go off and increase the intensity or magnitude of the fighting, but to rather secure what we hold to PREVENT escalation of hostilities.

That's inane. I don't care to get into such a stupid argument.

                    Britain’s AWOL ally

Cameron just made a very good point in his speech – namely, that Brown claimed just days ago that Obama would make an Afghanistan announcement in the “next few days”. Now, we have no idea when the announcement will come. But this isn't Gordon Brown’s fault – it’s Obama’s. The way Washington is treating Britain is deplorable and the subject of an excellent cover piece tomorrow by Con Coghlin (cover image above). As Con says in his piece:

'The Afghan issue has made clear the astonishing disregard with which Mr Obama treats Britain . As he decides how many more troops to send to Afghanistan – a decision which will fundamentally affect the scope of the mission – Britain is reduced to taking a guess. The White House does not even pretend to portray this as a joint decision. It is a diplomatic cold-shouldering that stands in contrast not just to the Blair-Bush era, but to the togetherness of the soldiers on the ground.'

Obama is simply not there. And in this respect he is, as we say on the cover, the worst kind of ally.

                          At least another week.

I'm guessing 30K will be the number.

I'm no fan of adding troops to Afghanistan -- I wonder why we're sending our boys over there when supplying the Afghans should be a hell of a lot cheaper. The rising violence just indicates to me that we aren't dealing with the right people or aren't dealing smartly with our current partners.

That said, it's mystifying to me why Obama is dithering on this -- or is allowing himself to be seen as dithering over this.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I suspect it is the division in his own party between those that want to send more troops and those that want to get out.

He will choose to stay in Afghanistan for the same reason he publicly supported the war in the first place - he doesn't want to appear weak by withdrawing from both wars (at least not right away).

Obama will continue to ride the middle ground as best he can by providing fewer troops than McChrystal has asked for. Hence my guess of 30K.
