  • Nero - not that you'll understand

The whole thing is a silly rock/pop opera which does a great job of combining drama, tragedy and comedy. The whole thing is awesome, it wonderfully ilustrates how modern society is just as decadent as Rome at its worst.

The coreography is average, but the content is pretty awesome. The whole experience can't really be captured in this clip.

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

With an ass like that, the odd flaw can be overlooked.

Notice the lampshading (far right) of a critic who said the thing would be nothing but Caligula on stage from what he knew of the author.

              This looks like an abomination.

Exactly. That's what makes it awesome.

Rome at its worst for decadence (sexual) would be under Caligula rather than Nero. At its worst for gluttony decadence would under Vitellius. For violence, it would have been at its worst during civil wars follwing C. Julius Caesar's assasination.

I'm too lazy to look up what "decadence" means precisely, but if it means what I think it means: absence of purpose, abundance of free time, lack of moral fiber, then I would contend that our day and age is not decadent.

While there is probably a segment of population that is decadent, many of us, probably most, aren't.

+ bonus points for me for understanding what the guy is singing

Apparently, he is Nero, the roman Emperor.

As much as this pains me to type - but -
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
