  • Volvo takes the fun out of driving

As its name indicates, the Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection system is capable of performing full braking power when a pedestrian enters its range.

The brand has been working on pedestrian detection for 10 years, and has collected data from more than 500 000 kilometres of testing. The latest testing took place in Copenhagen with the S60 prototype.

The system works by using radar coupled with a camera. First the radar detects objects and determines distance, while the camera analyzes the objects to determine their type.

In cases of imminent collision, an alarm sounds and a flashing brake light appears on the windshield. If the driver does not react, the car is able to fully stop independently.

The goal is not to avoid every accident, but rather at the very least, to minimize velocity impact, which will lower mortality rates.

The system will be launched with the S60 in early 2010.

What's the point of automobile ownership if you can't pick off the sick and old pedestrians from the herd?

Worse, that system can also make it impossible to tailgate and zigzag in dense traffic.

It's their own fault if they straggle on the roadway.

Step on the gas and turn on the wipers.

Rights are starting to disappear at an alarming rate.

I'm waiting for this system to malfunction and slam on the brakes at some stupid time. It will happen. We all know it will happen.

I'm in the market for a new (used) car and I'm considering Volvos.
S40 or S60 newer than 2000. Has anyone here owned one?

As a private company, they have every right to make cars how they see fit. Why do you hate the free market?

I'm sure some car tuning company will deactivate full auto brake and couple pedestrian detection with the no-zigzag function

No, no, no! You put the device in backwards, so that it actually AIMS your car at pedestrians.
