  • Raccoons successfully defend their territory

    She won't try this again.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Animal control officers hope to trap a pack of raccoons that mauled a 74-year-old woman who tried to chase them from her yard.

The sheriff in Polk County, east of Tampa, says Gretchen Whitted fell when five raccoons surrounded and attacked her Sunday. She was taken to a hospital with extensive cuts from her neck to her legs.

“We’re not talking about a lot of little bites here,” Sheriff Grady Judd said. “She was filleted.”

A neighbour called for help after hearing the woman’s cries and seeing her covered in blood.

Whitted was treated for rabies, though officials doubt the animals were infected.

Fire crews flooded nearby drains to drive the animals out, but none appeared. Animal control officers hope to catch them using cat food and sardines as bait.

Tigers and bears don't need to worry about their reps. The raccoons have a point to make.

Raccoons are absolutely vicious. My father tried live trapping them so he could relocate them, but after a few encounters with the caged raccoons he would just rather shoot them.

Most animals bolt after being released from a live trap. Raccoons charge.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Some people will never learn that raccoons do not fight fair. That's why I always keep a shotgun handy so I can act when I see the little furballs at the birdfeeder
If at first you don't succeed, take the bloody hint and give up.

They can be. The ones which lived in Santa Barbara though seemed to be semi tame or at least used to having lots of humans around. They'd literally walk up to us to see if we had food and would let us pet them. There was a raccoon nest right out the front door of the dinning commons and all the little babies would sit on the grass and beg food as people left. People would lay down on the grass and the raccoons would climb right up on top of them or sometimes they'd but their heads up against your hand because they wanted you to pet the top of their head like a dog.

Personally, I think a raccoon would make a great pet if you could some how get rid of their curiosity which makes them want to get into, knock over, taste, or just wreck things for fun.

The reality is if a human kicked a raccoon like a foot ball then the thing will have numerous broken bones and probably would die as it could no longer find food on its own.

I don't know why they doubt rabies. Raccoons don't normally hunt people in packs.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

These are Florida raccoons. Not those wimpy Texas ones.
