These techniques are not intended to cause death (though some of the harsher techniques may inadvertently cause death through e.g. heart attack or infection), though some may cause permanent physical/psychological harm. The question is which are ever justifiable, so you may imagine an interrogation subject who is ridiculously guilty of unimaginable crimes if you wish, the only stipulation is that the subject is human and is of majority age (e.g. 18).

depending on the crime to be prevented, everything is justifiable in theory, but few torture methods net any gain in practice since subject usually ends up lying. encouraging suspects to confess crimes they did not commit by torture is not part of a rational society.
in the USA, the whole national debate (omfg we must torture teh terrorists but liberal cowards oppose) was a wedge issue presented in form of a false dilemma
