  • Mass. postal worker admits to stealing 30,000 DVDs

    30,000? That's a lot.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- A former postal service employee has pleaded guilty to stealing more than 30,000 DVDs that moved through a western Massachusetts post office.

Myles Weathers, formerly of Springfield, took DVDs that were mailed by Netflix to customers for a year beginning in January 2007.

Federal prosecutors say the movie rental company alerted Springfield post office officials that a suspiciously high number of DVDs were disappearing. As many as 100 movies a week were disappearing.

Weathers was arrested in February 2008 after investigators filmed him taking DVDs from packages and slipping them into his backpack.

He faces 10 months to 16 months in prison and restitution costs of about $38,000 at his Dec. 23 sentencing.

Weathers' attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

Holy crap, I originally come from Springfield, MA and my father just retired from the post office, he worked there for almost 30 years. I had to make sure he wasn't the one responsible.

Edit: I forgot to add, theft in the postal service is a huge problem. I remember my father telling me years ago about how many employees were caught on camera taking money out of cards and such.

I know that I seem to not be missing any sales circulars. Tell him that he can take them if he wants them.

Netflix is one of those companies that knows their whole business model will be gone in 6 years. I love watching companies with gay names die and they are dying.

I don't know how this guy managed to get away with stealing that many though. The money theft bust happened a long time ago so I thought they'd improved security measures since then. I guess NOT.

You tend to get all sorts. We had a guy terminated last week for throwing batches of print advertisements in a dumpster, prints that he was supposed to deliver. He'd been with us for a year. A citizen called in, ads were retrieved from dumpster, quick glance at the addresses in question - and case closed.

By the way, a minor point with regards to the OP, how does "as many as 100 movies a week" for a year add up to "more than 30,000 DVDs"?

Oh, and don't you start being racist against postal workers! It's despicable!

Heck yes. And while we’re at it, let’s hope a lot of people end up unemployed. God, I’d love that too.

Hmmm... so what should we believe in? 30,000 DVD's or "As many as 100 movies a week" ?

He was there for a bit more than a year, so let's make it 56 weeks
                  30,000 DVDs / 56 weeks = 535 DVDs/week
535 is a bit more than the "As many as 100 movies a week"

And how does one manage to steal even 100 dvds per week? On average 20 dvds per day... 20 dvds takes a lot of space in a backpack. Also did he manage to throw the package away or did he take it with him aswell? If he threw it away that would be a lot of extra trash (how can that much extra trash get unnoticed? Not only would he need a big enough trashcan, he would also need to spend a lot of time unpacking at work) and if he took the package home as well, he would need an even bigger backpack (or throw them into his car, that would be many walks to the car every day)

Sure sounds like he never actually got any work done as he would have spent most of his time stealing
This space is empty... or is it?

Maybe he wore them as a hat. Who's gonna give him trouble over a fashion statement? No one, that’s who!

Damn. I wish he was my mail carrier.

                          Heh, good point.

Here you can choose not to receive any print advertisements. A third of all households in my area of Copenhagen have done so.

I should add that this is a centralised scheme agreed to by consumers', advertisers' and distributors' councils. Works like a charm.

They won't allow us to do that. Without junk mail Canada Post would be out of business tomorrrow.
