  • Zune HD

The Zune HD came out today and I'm drooling over it. nVidia Tegra processor, OLED 720p touch screen, HD Radio, wi-fi and a 16 GB flash player for $219 (there is a 32 GB version for $289):

Just downloaded the Zune 4.0 software and it's gorgeous. Currently I have an 8 GB iPod Nano, but I think this blows it out of the water.

    Anyone else contemplating getting one?

I am. Problem is back when I was young(er) and (more)stupid, I routinely bought music from the iTunes store with DRM on it, so something like a quarter of my tracks are protected.

I bought my gf an iPod Touch (for ebooks, mostly), and I have an iAudio X5 myself. I don't see how Zune is more useable than the former (unless it is universally recognised as a UMS device and has all the killer apps), and I'm not into the fancy stuff myself. Most of my mp3s are still untagged, I have next to none albums with cover art, and I use Winamp 2.8 to play them.

Steal them in a DRM-free format. It's not like you don't own them at all.

DRM can be easily removed. For example, you can burn your tracks on a CD and then rip them, without the DRM.

It looks like a nice piece of kit, but if its about the size of the iPod Touch, its too big for my needs.

That degrades the quality of the file. Unfortunately, Apple wants a fee per track to un-DRM them . Thankfully I decided I wasn't going to buy any files from an online store (I like physical media).

Oh, and as for Oerdin, I think he just saw a recent picture of me and is engaging in a bit of wish fulfillment. Don't worry, Oerdin; I'm not offended, I'm flattered.

I ordered mine at around 5am this morning when the Zune Originals store finally updated.

I have a Zune Pass, so that combined with wireless marketplace = unlimited, instant access to the entire catalog.

I want mine to come already

I hated the Zune 3.0 software. 4.0 didn't fix my primary or secondary complaints (1: no 5-star ratings, 2: no query-based searching like in WMP) but the "smart DJ mix" feature rocks, so I am happy.

Any idea how much that degrades the file?

Not that much, unless your ears are made of the finest gold-plated eardrums and nerves.
