When will people stop predicting the end of the world?

Alright, what asshats predicted 2012 to be the end of the world. Like I don't have enough to worry about already. Not only that, I'm forced to endure another film with world landmarks getting blown up. Do writers even try to put a plot in their movies any more? or character development? Instead they write about which historical world landmarks should get blown up.

Saw the trailer for this one while seeing Harry Potter today in the theaters finally. What's really funny is they actually seem to be proud of the fact this is the same director who did The Day After Tomorrow. I would disown that film if I was the director of it. Godzilla and the patriot were crap too. Same with Independence Day. Sigh

Movies like this make me embarrassed to come from the same country as these things are made in.

And to show a picture of an aircraft carrier overturning. Not that it couldn't happen, but that aircraft carrier has been decommissioned.

So what asshats predicted 2012? Was it the mayans or something like that? What I want to know is if we make it past 2012 are we in the free and clear? Or are there other armeggeddon dates that I have to watch out for bad hollywood movies?

AFAIK after 2012 we've got a ways to go before the next Armageddon date, which would be sometime in 2036 the 2nd time Apophis rolls around and is supposed to have a 1 in 42,000 chance of hitting the earth. Or something. Unless someone digs up some obscure Lichtensteinian pagan cult of bog- worshipers, I think we're clear after that. But by then I'll be too old to care.

Anyway since I am European I am pretty sure anything the Mayans predicted can't hurt me, but I might decide to see the Rio Grand Canyon (?) before your foul continent sinks in the ocean.
