  • CDC to promote routine circumcisions

Public health officials are considering promoting routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States to reduce the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

The topic is a delicate one that has already generated controversy, even though a formal draft of the proposed recommendations, due out from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by the end of the year, has yet to be released.

Experts are also considering whether the surgery should be offered to adult heterosexual men whose sexual practices put them at high risk of infection. But they acknowledge that a circumcision drive in the United States would be unlikely to have a drastic impact: the procedure does not seem to protect those at greatest risk here, men who have sex with men.

Recently, studies showed that in African countries hit hard by AIDS, men who were circumcised reduced their infection risk by half. But the clinical trials in Africa focused on heterosexual men who are at risk of getting H.I.V. from infected female partners.

For now, the focus of public health officials in this country appears to be on making recommendations for newborns, a prevention strategy that would only pay off many years from now. Critics say it subjects baby boys to medically unnecessary surgery without their consent.

But Dr. Peter Kilmarx, chief of epidemiology for the division of H.I.V./AIDS prevention at the C.D.C., said that any step that could thwart the spread of H.I.V. must be given serious consideration.

“We have a significant H.I.V. epidemic in this country, and we really need to look carefully at any potential intervention that could be another tool in the toolbox we use to address the epidemic,” Dr. Kilmarx said. “What we’ve heard from our consultants is that there would be a benefit for infants from infant circumcision, and that the benefits outweigh the risks.”

He and other experts acknowledged that although the clinical trials of circumcision in Africa had dramatic results, the effects of circumcision in the United States were likely to be more muted because the disease is less prevalent here, because it spreads through different routes and because the health systems are so disparate as to be incomparable.

Clinical trials in Kenya, South Africa and Uganda found that heterosexual men who were circumcised were up to 60 percent less likely to become infected with H.I.V. over the course of the trials than those who were not circumcised.

There is little to no evidence that circumcision protects men who have sex with men from infection.

Gay men are still screwed, but this should save lives amongst heterosexual men.

      Sloww:

Drake: I have mixed feelings about this. Yes, the data is pretty rock solid, circumcised men do seem to be less likely to contract a variety of STDs from vaginal intercourse as compared to noncircumcised men. However, wearing a condom virtually eliminates all such risk to begin with, circumcised or not. I'm not entirely sure this is compelling evidence to perform what is essentially cosmetic surgery on newborn male's genitals.

I've performed god only knows how many circumcisions, and I've never had a single complication (knock on wood). But every surgical procedure has risks. I don't see why this isn't something that could be done on an elective basis when the patient is older and understands the relative risks and benefits, as opposed to mandating it for all newborns.

This is different than vaccines. Diptheria, pertussis, measles, rotavirus, varicella, etc. etc.: these are diseases of childhood. Syphilis and HIV are not.

I still feel it reduces sexual pleasure in men. Why is this acceptable? It shouldn't be.

I don't find a problem with them recommending it I suppose for health reasons. But definately should not be mandatory.

Not as much as a condom.

But it would be silly to have sex with questionable women without a condom. So you got a double reduction there.

You're also doubly protected. Circumcision also grants protection against unexpected risks while in a relationship where you don't feel the need for condoms.

I don't care enough about the subject, but I say wait till the kid is old enough to decide for himself. The parents have no idea what the personality of the kid will be when he grows up. He may be the type that likes math and science, and will never get sex. Thus there is no reason to get cut.

I can't help but feel I'm missing out because I was cut. But maybe that's just my imagination. I just want better sex. What can I say. I'm kind of envious of women. They seem capable of much better orgasms than men.

It clearly says they are considering, not that they are.

                    Misleading thread title -> permaban.

It also doesn't matter whatever the **** the CDC says. As far as I can tell, they've no say in this.

Last I checked all of the pediatric societies in the western world do not encourage circumcisions, nor do most medical associations (I actually don't know of a single one that does). Most of them for the same reason our resident Pediatrician mentioned -- all procedures have risks, and there's no benefit to circumcision in a developed country where most men use condoms when having sex with whores and other vaginal-afflicted living cadavers.

Meh, I wish I had been circumcised.

Saying that it should be left up to the choice of the child is a bit of a cop out IMO. Few grown men are going to allow a blade anywhere near their manhood for an almost entirely cosmetic procedure. If circumcision isn't done to babies, it is not likely to occur in adulthood.
