That's our position. Whether that's the position of the country with the better case, isn't on us.

Except you're still condoning the torture that you know for a virtual certainty will occur in those countries...

Washing your hands of a problem like that is just about the lowest form of moral cowardice I can think of.
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

Ugh. Guys, governments torture people - always have, always will. All the **** that happened during Bush's administration and now Obama's is merely theater; to pretend otherwise is naive.

If you actually care about the fact that governments torture people, complain about it the rest of the time and not just when it makes the news.

I strongly disagree with the "always will" statement. All that has to happen is for governmental officials to learn that torture is counterproductive.

The CIA tortured Al Qaeda big wigs hundreds of times at Gitmo. The result was zippo.

Saddam Hussein was treated humanely, and he blabbed his head off.

You do realize that according to the document dump by Obama, the program was considered to be an "absolute success" right?

Er... lots of people do complain about it all the time. Including several posting in this thread.

And just because some governments torture doesn't mean that civilized nations should condone it.

Eh. We rarely see threads here about the rampant torture that occurs throughout the world on a constant basis in uncivilized nations, but there's a thread every single time the relatively minor amount of torture that went on at Gitmo gets press again.

But don't think I'm being jingoistic here. We also rarely have threads about the rampant torture committed by the "civilized" nations throughout the Cold War and other periods of intense espionage and counterintelligence.

And just because some governments torture doesn't mean that civilized nations should condone it.
I hardly think it should be condoned. But acting surprised - or even self-righteous - when it happens is amazing hypocritical. All nations engage in torture when they need to, and every law abiding, tax paying citizen funds it.

Because the US, and the UK when it concerns us are countries that should be above such things, and where they are against the law.

We hold ourselves and each other to much higher standards, and so we should!

There's never a need to torture. The information you gain from it isn't reliable.

The article said there isn't going to be any torture, so in theory what is wrong with rendition? Countries use rendition to give us suspects all the time, why should we not do the same if those countries need access to suspects?
