Providing you follow the directions and adiquetly sterilize everything with a bleach water solution (making sure you use cold clean water to rinse it thoroughly) then it's kind of hard to totally screw it up.

I use a no-rinse sanitizer that works pretty well. Saves all the time spent rinsing, and you don't need to worry about any residue.

Is it? You'll need a room the cops can't find easily, the appropriate heating and the right seeds.

I live a few hundred metres from a proper brewery, so it's easier for me to pop round there than for me to actually produce my own, but I'd be very tempted to in future. It'd have to be strong, dark, and taste fantastic (and other pr0n cliches), but the pleasure of making my own would be insurmountable. Well, once it was palatable anyway...
