nice
I've been to most of the places in the southwest, why I love the sw so much.
Cathedral gorge It's been a while since I've been there though, can't remember that much.
meteor crater- this is pretty cool. Most meteor/comet strikes are in wooded areas, and quickly become overgrown. This place you can see the entire hole which is nice.
Petrified Forrest- not too many people know about this attraction- pretty cool
Grand Canyon- I've been there so many times it is pretty much a hole in the ground . I'd still like to hike to the bottom some day though.
Hoover Dam- It's the lowest point in Nevada- so it does get pretty hot. Generally the higher the elevation- the cooler it is. Las Vegas is at 2100 feet, Hoover Dam is much lower. It's friggin hot down there. But Vegas was around 112 last week (maybe when you were there), that isn't exactly pleasant. Most neighborhoods were at 115 due to what I call "city heat". Exhaust from cars, more hot air created by air conditions. it's hotter than the open desert by far.
Zion is still beautiful despite the drought. I was there last year. Spring is the best time to go though. And it can get hot in the summer. That road you mentioned is a nice mountain road, but the best views are in the canyon. During the summer you can't drive it, you have to take the busses (which are there to alleviate congestion and pollution). Walking up the Virgin river is nice (usually doesn't get above waist high). It's cool walking through the river. You don't have to worry about leeches or other creepy stuff like back east.
Never been to the Great Salt Lake. It's just a salt water lake. . What do you expect for salt water. It's pretty stagnant too as alot more water is diverted now days. It's nasty. As for shade- well you are in the desert there

Next stop was Winslow, AZ, where we took pictures of each other standing on a corner.
Nice.
Mt. Rushmore and the Corn Palace.
Mistake. After Mt. Rushmore you should've gone south to Pine Ridge in the northwest corner of Nebraska, further south to Carhenge and then southeast through the Sand Hills. South Dakota east of the Badlands is pointless...

I did the observation point trail in Zion NP last year. It's a little tough, but nothing too major. You basically hike from the bottom to the top.
*crosses fingers hoping they allow hotlinks *

gonna due the angels landing hike in Zion this October weather permitting. It's one of the most popular hikes in the western U.S. (perhaps the most popular along with halfdome)
Angels landing hike:
I generally don't like hikes with a lot of exposure (big drop offs) that you can see in the above pic. But I think the chains will make me feel more comfortable. I've scaled some pretty intense cliffs, but none of them had falls over 20 or so feet. You could survive it if you fell, unlike these

I told my wife and daughter about the 17-day driving/camping trip.
Wife: They are either very brave or very stupid.
Daughter: And she's still his girlfriend?
Conclusion1: Well done, you!
Conclusion2: You might as well get married now.
Excellent travelogue BTW. Very enjoyable commentary.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

I was thinking something similar. That is a long ass trip, especially for lots and lots of driving.
What'd you do on the road? Did you have satellite radio? Long times on the road are always a *****. If you survived that, you are ready for marriage.
I never had anything fancy like satellite radio. I usually bring lots of cd's. But if I have someone in the car with me, I have to listen to music other people actually enjoy. Sometimes I surf the radio stations trying to fine that elusive radio station that is the be all end all of radio stations and plays nothing but good songs. But generally I only find hick or mexican radio stations.

Utah has interesting scenery, but the Great Salt Lake stinks badly. I don't care to look at it again.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Grr. Going to the Corn Palace was giving in to peer pressure. Everyone that heard we were going on a road trip told us we had to do it. We will not be fooled a second time.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

Well, thank you for stopping. Now I will never have to.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
