  • Don't Stop The Carnival

I have debated, for some time now, on leaving dodge (the US) and moving somewhere more appealing to me and just reinventing myself. My wife likes the idea, and is on board if we so decide to this. In addition, our second family has also made indications of doing the same thing. Some of it is an extension of the desire to escape the rat race, avoid certain issues in life not worth bothering with, and really to start enjoying life instead of dragging our feet through it.

Sometimes it seems that it's all an uphill battle and it's the things that keep us going that we really should be focusing on, instead of the things we are battling.

Our extended family are soon to be empty nesters (4 years or so) while wifey and I are just starting to create the brood. My concern is in regards to education in foreign countries, namely tropic nations. We have decided on a particular place, were we to pursue this route, but what in your opinion is a good tropical ex-pat haven with a good education system? Are other option is home school, wifey has a teaching credential and we are both highly educated, so that's always a possibility.

Anyone else, apart from Zkrib and Lancer, thought about doing something similar?

The reason this comes up now, is that I saw a couple on House Hunter's International move to Belize to start a family. I thought that odd, but then began to wonder.

I read the OP and I'm thinking... Moose Jaw. Ummm. You'll love it there.

Bonus is it won't take that much for you and your family to master the local language.

                Edit: I misread the OP.

There are decent private, international schools in lots of tropical countries. The problem is that they a free to charge a bloody fortune for tuition, because very few familes with kids enrolled there pay out-of-pocket (instead, their employers pay as part of the employee compensation package).

Home schooling's definitely an option; lots of folks in the foreign service do it, and online resources have made it easier than ever. University of Nebraska, I think, has all sorts of special materials avalable.

But I'd never send my kid to a local school in a 3rd world country; and that rules out every tropical country except Singapore (where I would send her to a local school).

Since when would struggling to survive in [anywhere on Earth] not resemble "the rat race"?

i'm planning to emigrate to brasil in the early part of next year. it's something i've been thinking about for a while, ever since losing my law job and training contract last year left me potless and with no future.

i'm a young guy with no ties, so my situation is clearly very different from yours.

Can you elaborate on these "certain issues?"
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

No, because that is not what this thread is about.
