For 'zample: On hot days, more people faint while walking down the sidewalk. Next to them are blacktop roads, which are softer on hot days. Using those two facts, you cannot say you've proven that hot blacktop roads emit a toxic gas which causes people to faint. In reality, these two facts are both results of an underlying cause: Hot weather -- which both causes people to faint and which softens blacktop roads.
How about this one: The U.S. is one of the few industrialized nations to have capital punishment. We also have one of the highest murder rates. Using these facts, can we claim that capital punishments causes citizens to murder one another?
