I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

This may be true of China but It probably isn't for Japan and South Korea at least not anymore.

In any case the singularity will probably be an acheivment of all civlizations not just the West. BTW Can I just ask you how you define "the West"?

The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

All the countries with a standard of living and level of education and technology comparable to the United States. Japan is basically the only country on that list that isn't in what's culturally considered the West.

I'm not having kids and I'm going to hell when I die, so if my contributions to the science of dickgirlology don't live on for future generations then what form of immortality am I left with?

Well remember, it has to be a fantastically good deed for you to be remembered for any length of time for it. But do something hideously evil and nasty and you'll be remembered with a fraction of the effort. Go on a mass murder spree or blow up a skyscraper. That'll get you the immortality you desire

They meant well. They wrecked everything. They left very few discernable records. Just a buch of etched silicon of no value to anyone now. They allowed the population to reach 7 billion without creating any outposts off planet.

How much is remembered of the pre-Age of Discovery European states? How much of what we have for the period 1000 - 1500 sounds like complete drivel now? As for them, so for us. When real space travel/exploration begins, the history of the time before it will fade away. However, I would not bet on the singularity in the near future.
